Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP)
If you were looking for words that slip lightly off
the tongue then neurolinguistic programming (NLP) would probably not be
among them. The worst thing about neurolinguistic programming is its name
and when you get past that it offers enormous benefits.
So what exactly is it and how did it get that name and why would you want to know about it?
In the early seventies two remarkable men (John Grinder and Richard Bandler) synthesised and developed a model of human communication which explains how as individuals we do what we do in terms of behaviour. Grinder was an Associate Professor in Linguistics and Bandler interested in human behaviour and computers. So mixing those two together they created neurolinguistic programming.
So what could that mean for you?
Well, what they developed was a set of tools for understanding, coding and then replicating patterns of behaviour. In other words they worked out how different people produce different behaviours and then developed ways of improving those behaviours. ( for example in personal life and relationships, in sports, in therapy, in business, in sales and so on.)
The difference between neurolinguistic programming and other behavioural models is that neurolinguistic programming (despite its off-putting name) is a very pragmatic and usable model. Neurolinguistic programming (NLP for short) allows individuals to improve their performance in several ways. Firstly by understanding and changing their own behaviour patterns: secondly by understanding and influencing other people's behaviour patterns (which is really what management is all about) and thirdly by adopting new behaviours modelled from the best performers (Learning how to be as good as the best in any chosen field)
